Lost an ID, passport or document: what to do first

A lost passport, identity card, driving licence, student card or certificate is more than an inconvenience. Documents can be misused, replacements take time, and many are needed for travel or work within days. This page explains what people most often lose in this category, what to do in the first hours, how reporting and matching work on DokiFinder, and how to reduce the risk next time. Reporting a lost document is free.

What people lose in this category

Passports and identity cards are lost most often while travelling, in taxis, at airports and in hotel rooms. Driving licences and bank cards usually go with a wallet. Student cards, residence permits, diplomas, insurance cards and visas also turn up in found-item reports, often handed in by someone who found them on the street or on public transport.

The first hours

Retrace your steps and contact the last places you had the document. Then report it to the authority that issued it or to the police, because a replacement normally needs the report and the report protects you against misuse. If you are abroad, contact your embassy or consulate. Block any cards that were with the document. Write down the document number somewhere safe, but keep it out of any public text.

How reporting works on DokiFinder

Post a lost report with the type of document, the issuing country, and where and when you last had it. Do not post the document number. Your report is compared with found reports from individuals and from organizations such as airports, hotels, universities and transport operators. When a likely match appears you are notified and can prove the document is yours privately.

How documents are protected

Photos of passports and ID cards are never sent to an AI service. Sensitive fields are hidden in public listings, and the name and country printed on a document can only be searched by signed-in users who have verified their identity. A finder is asked to leave the document number out of the public text, so only the real owner can supply it.

Prevention

Keep a photocopy or a secure photo of your documents separately from the originals, in a place you can reach from another device. Do not carry every document at once. Use a hotel safe where available, and keep your passport and your cards in different pockets.

Frequently asked questions

Should I report a lost passport to DokiFinder or to the police?

Both. The police or the issuing authority report is what a replacement requires. The DokiFinder report searches for the document itself among found items.

Should I put my passport number in the listing?

No. Keep document numbers out of public text. You will be asked for details privately when you prove the document is yours.

Are photos of documents sent to an AI?

No. Photos of identity documents are never sent to an AI service, and sensitive fields are hidden in public listings.

Is there a reward for a found document?

The owner can offer a reward, which is held securely until the return is confirmed. Finders pay nothing.

What if I found someone else's document?

Post a found report with the place and time, leave the number out of the text, and arrange the return through the platform once the owner proves it is theirs.
