Lost AirPods or Earbuds? How to Find Them (Even One Earbud)

Lost your AirPods, a single earbud or the case? How to track them with Find My or Find Hub, where they usually end up, and how to get them back.

Earbuds are one of the most commonly lost electronics: they fall out on the bus, slip between sofa cushions or get left on a gym bench. Because they are small and often in a case, they are easy to overlook — and easy to find again if you act methodically.

Step 1: Use device tracking first

  • AirPods: open the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, or go to iCloud. Apple explains how to use Find My to locate a lost device. You can see the last known location and, when they are nearby and connected, play a sound — useful in a room or a car.
  • Android earbuds: many models from major brands can be located with Google Find Hub or the manufacturer's own app. Check what your model supports.
  • One earbud lost: tracking may show the earbud and the case separately. Take one earbud out of your ears and the case away when playing a sound, so you can hear which is which.
  • Turn on Lost Mode or the equivalent if your earbuds support it, so a finder can see a message with your contact details.

Step 2: Search the usual places

  • Car: between and under seats, in the door pockets and seat rails.
  • Home: sofa and bed, coat pockets, the washing machine and dryer (check them before the next wash).
  • Bags: inner pockets and the lining.
  • Gym, office, café: call and ask; earbuds are frequently handed to staff.

Step 3: Lost on the move?

If you lost them on a bus, train, plane or in a taxi, contact the operator's lost property service and give the exact time and route. Our guides to items lost on transport and airport lost and found explain who to contact.

Step 4: Report them so a finder can reach you

Most people who find earbuds have no idea who they belong to. Post a free lost-item report on DokiFinder with the model, colour, case details and where you lost them (a free account is required). Our matching compares your report with found items and alerts you to likely matches.

On DokiFinder the reward is held in escrow and only released when you confirm you have them back. The minimum reward is €30 for AirPods and €20 for other headphones, and finders are identity-verified before they are paid.

Step 5: If they do not turn up

  • Replacement of a single earbud or the case: many manufacturers sell single earbuds or cases as a paid replacement. Check your manufacturer's support pages.
  • Insurance: check your phone or gadget insurance, or home contents insurance.
  • Keep your proof of purchase and the serial number — it helps with replacements, insurance and proving ownership if they are found.

Prevent it next time

  • Make sure tracking is switched on for your earbuds before you need it.
  • Use a case with a lanyard or a brightly coloured cover so it is easier to spot.
  • Put earbuds back in the case every time you take them out.

FAQ: Lost earbuds

Can I find one lost AirPod?

Often, yes. Find My can show the last known location of an individual AirPod and, when it is nearby, play a sound on it.

My earbuds show an old location. What now?

That is where they last connected. Go there, play a sound if possible, and ask staff at nearby businesses. Report them on DokiFinder in case someone picked them up.

Should I remove lost AirPods from my account?

No — not while you are still looking. Removing them from Find My stops you seeing their location and switches off Lost Mode. Only remove them once you have given up or replaced them.

I found someone's earbuds. What should I do?

Hand them to staff where you found them, or post them as found on DokiFinder. See what to do when you find something.
