Losing a purse or handbag is rarely about the bag itself. It usually holds your wallet, keys, phone, ID and a dozen small things you only miss later. That makes it urgent — but the order you act in matters more than speed. Protect your money and your home first, then search.
Step 1: Protect your money and your accounts
- Freeze or block your cards in your banking app, or call your bank's emergency line. Freezing is reversible if the bag turns up.
- If your phone was in the bag, mark it as lost in Apple Find My or Google Find Hub — it may also show where the bag is now.
- Change passwords for email and banking if your phone was unlocked or had no passcode.
- In the United States, the FTC explains what to do about lost or stolen credit and debit cards and how quickly to report them.
Step 2: Think about your home
Were your keys in the bag together with something showing your address — an ID card, a letter, a parcel slip? If so, treat it as a security risk and consider changing or rekeying your locks. Our lost keys guide explains when that is necessary.
Step 3: Search systematically
- Retrace your route in order: the last place you paid, sat down or put the bag on a chair or the floor.
- Call the places you visited: cafés, restaurants, shops, the gym, the cinema, your workplace. Bags are very often handed to staff.
- Transport: if you took a bus, train, taxi or ride-share, contact the operator's lost property service or use the app's lost item option — see our guide to items lost on transport.
- Check nearby bins and quiet corners: a thief often takes the cash and dumps the bag — with your ID still inside.
Step 4: Report the loss
- Police: report the loss or theft. You will need the report to replace documents and for insurance.
- Local lost property office: many found bags are handed in there. Check again after a few days.
- DokiFinder: post a free lost-item report with a photo or detailed description and where you lost it (a free account is required). Our matching compares it with found-item listings and alerts you to likely matches.
Step 5: Make returning it worth the finder's time
An honest finder needs a safe, simple way to reach you. On DokiFinder the reward is calculated with a transparent formula — minimums are €20 for a purse and €30 for a bag — and held in escrow before you are put in contact. It is released only when you confirm you have your bag back, and finders are identity-verified before they are paid. No cash meetings with strangers.
Step 6: Replace what is gone
Make a list of everything that was in the bag and work through it: cards, ID, driving licence, health card, travel passes, loyalty cards. For a lost wallet inside the bag, our lost wallet guide has a full checklist.
Prevent it next time
- Put a small tracking tag inside the lining.
- Keep a note of your card issuers' emergency numbers somewhere other than your bag.
- Never hang a bag on the back of a chair in a busy place — keep it on your lap or between your feet.
FAQ: Lost purse or handbag
I have lost my purse. What should I do first?
Block your cards, then think about your keys and address. After that, retrace your route, call the places you visited and report the loss.
How do I find a lost purse?
Call every place you visited, check transport lost property, look for it near where you lost it in case it was dumped, and post a report on DokiFinder so a finder can reach you.
Should I change my locks?
Only if your keys were lost together with something showing your address. Otherwise many people wait a few days.
Is a lost bag covered by insurance?
Often by home contents or travel insurance, sometimes with limits for cash and valuables. You will usually need a police report.
